On the Abbreviations & Phrases
These Latin abbreviations & phrases are a fine way in which to
demonstrate advanced learning and dissuade the casual—and hence
unworthy—reader. Use them frequently and without concern, for an
intelligent reader will understand them and the ignorant do not deserve
to. The student should commit them to memory in order to be never in
doubt as to a passage’s meaning, and to avoid the potential
embarrassment of misusing one.
